Can i boost or reduce audio in a "section" of a track?

It has been a while since I worked on a Reaper project, but I got got version 4 and am starting a new project. Has anyone ever come up with a way to adjust the volume of a portion of a track? I did some live recording and the singer would occasionally move a bit away from the mike (or a little close)so the volume in a few small areas are either higher or lower than the rest of the track. I would like to adjust these individual sections by a small amount to make them approximately equal to the rest of the track and I don't want to normalize. Is Reaper able to do this now? You can use track automation or try using a compressor.

Hit "s" before and after the section you want to adjust, then drag the item volume handle

highlight the track, press v, use a volume envelope

Just tried the split and the "v" thing mentioned. Even with the split, the volume level affects the whole track!

Even with the up and down arrows, It still affects the whole track envelope. If I split a track, the volume envelope for that track does not split with it.

That last post shows exactly what I would like to do, but I can't do it. The volume envelope of the whole track gets raised or lowered regardless of the split in the track. Also, the waveform remains the same. Its as if I was raising the volume from the volume fader, which I am not. Another thing is that when I place the curser over the volume level, it turns into a up-down arrow, but has no circle around it as shown in the last video post. It just drags the whole track to a higher or lower volume. Also, Holding the Shift key, or the control key, or the Alt key, or any combination of keys while dragging the volume has no different effect, The whole track's volume gets raised or lowered, with no change in waveform size. YIKES!

I found a work-a-round ... i think. After i split the section I want, I right click on "Item Properties". I then get a box which says "Media Item Properties". I go to the volume slider and adjust the level ... I see the waveform change!!! Then I click "Apply". The volume changes! It will work. But is more time consuming than the up-down arrow method (which I can't get working)
