You're trying to do 2 different things at once. By hitting "v" you activated the Track volume envelope, which really isn't what you want. Right click on the envelope itself and click "Clear or Remove envelope". Then open the PDF manual to pg 119 and read about the "Item Volume handle", which is what Breeder is showing in his gif: Use the S key to perform your splits then use the Item volume handle to lower (or Shift and raise) the volume of the separate pieces. Or, if you do want to use the Track volume automation, you can hit Shift-click to create points for editing. Pg 305 in the PDF manual. You need to get a basic understanding of the differences of these functions.
Did you make two splits? One split should be before where you want to lower the volume and one split after, so you have a new little media item on it's own. Then, grab the volume bar handle and pull it down. Only the split media item will be affected.
Got it. Thanks. But I noticed that the volume waveform does't change while I am moving the handle. Only afterwards does it change. After I change the volume and try to glue it to the adjoining section, I get an error creating output media file. (I put another post up about this earlier). So i can now change the levels but can't glue them back.
Probably not selecting all 3 items to glue, if you've still only selected the part you rode volume on. I use "Heal" rather than glue, but they might be the same. Right/click/drag is really fast for selecting more than one item. Also, try downloading SWS extensions, there are many actions/key commands to help with this type of editing - my latest fave is create a 2ms crossfade on selected ADJACENT items. You won't get a jump/click on the type of edits you're doing, and you don't have to stretch the edges of items to overlap to create said crossfade.
