I'm not exactly sure how this,"Edison" works in your way of doing things but I have the free,"Audacity" assigned to Reaper so that if I double click on any track with a wav in it it will pop-up as it's wave editor.I have a folder in my Reaper folder for samples and assign that as the default save path in Audacity and then in Reaper have that folder in my Explorer shortcuts.This way if I edit a wav I can drag and drop it into a track in Reaper dead easy. does this help?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, there are a lot of ways of manipulating audio (I've used your method, for example, with Wavelab), and I appreciate your response. What I really like about Edison is that you can put it in the chain as a VST effect. Then you record the audio to it, select what part of the audio you want to keep, then drag and drop the audio directly onto a track. I used to record audio, chop it up and load it into a sampler, but this way is so much quicker. So what's important to me about this is the process. I would like a tool that records the output of a track directly into the plug-in, and the ability to cut and edit the wav, then drag and drop onto a track.

Actually, now that I look at this again, it's a bit misleading. I'm using it primarily for VSTis -- to record short segments of the output so that I can use and manipulate the audio on another track. Let me give a quick, real-world example. Let's say that I composed a four bar drum loop. Now let's say that I want to mangle it a bit. I have one audio track that's compressed to shit and another with a filter and a gate. I can record one track of the vsti, plop it onto two different tracks and then slice and dice the resulting audio destructively. All this can be done in a minute's time. I don't need to do any exporting, rendering, or weird routing. Mind you, I still love the weird routing, but now I can reserve it for actual mixing. I'm sort of a freak for composing and tracking and mixing all at the same time. It's more of an iterative process.

You can record the output of VSTi's in realtime directly on the Reaper timeline with the Record:Output function. (right click the R button). No quicker way IMO.

Yes, but it records the audio directly to the track. Suppose I want more than one track? Suppose I don't want the entire audio, but only one and a half bars of it, etc. I mean, there are other ways to do this. I've tried nearly everything under the sun. This way is FUN. And that's something I've been missing for awhile.

To use more than one track (and also not to mess up your Midi/Vst track) you could just use sends to send the Audio to another track and record this. Usually I do it like this.

I really am not exactly sure if I'm getting this,but Melodyne create 8 or Studio sounds like it will do this to me. I know that on mine you can drag tracks from the Melody manager straight to Reaper no problem. You can insert the Bridge as a vst or use their plug in(cheaper version). It would be worth investigating I think. Melodyne is ALOT more than tuning software,,,,the create 8 version is a DAW by its self with 8 track mixer recorder. Studio is 16 tracks with a really powerful mixer. OK I just did it in Melodyne ,,,,dragged a track straight into Reaper. That Melody manager is REALLY nice for just simply dragging tracks around to Reaper. Let me know if this helps OK? I'm pretty sure it will do what you want.
