S60 mysterious boxes

Hi, I was looking at replacing the headlight bulbs on my MY05 S60 and was trying to work out if I could make room for my large hands by temporarily removing whatever sits behind them in the engine bay. On the nearside there is the air filter housing which should come out quite easily. On the offside there is a box containing two slot-in modules which look like some part of the electronic system. The modules look a little like oversize computer hard disks. Can anyone tell me what they are, how they might come out and whether it is safe to take them out? Will I break anything? Should I disconnect the battery first? Or should I leave well alone? Cheers, Alistair

I'd leave them alone unless you know what you're doing, they are the engine ECU and auto transmission ECU. Probably one of the singular most expensive parts of the car to replace. To replace the bulbs on your car (2005 model), I was on the understanding the bumper has to be removed...

What are you going to do now then? Im still wanting to change my bulbs but have the same issue as yours as discussed in the other threads

Doesn't Vadis show you how to replace the bulbs? Taking the bumper off seems slightly extreme. I'd check myself but I don't have Vadis. Do the later cars have a different engine bay arrangement then, as I replaced the headlight AND indicator bulbs in my 2001 car. If you think the headlamp bulbs are fiddly, the indicators are like an initiative and contortionist test rolled into one!
