how to kill reaper.exe?

i'm sure this is due to a dodgy plugin, or driver somewhere and not an actual reaper issue but... when using 2.53 on XP, every once and awhile (not often), reaper evaporates on me. "poof," it is gone from the screen completely. however, in XP task manager, the reaper.exe process is still running and using memory, and i can't kill it no matter what i try unless i reboot my whole system (which is a lengthy p.i.t.a. procedure). anybody know a way to kill the reaper.exe process in this situation? like i mentioned, using task manager does not do it when this happens. thanks in advance. -d. gauss

You can kill it if you go into the "Processes" tab and click "end process". It will warn you it could have undesirable effects but it won't. Best to try and find out which plug causes it to happen though

Do you have a USB or Firewire device that Reaper uses? Try unplugging it and see if it makes reaper.exe go away.

Are you using BFD by any chance? <- can be a buggy plugin which can cause exactly what you're experiencing

Use the pskill.exe from system internals.

Or Process explorer(free), I have a short cut to it on my Start menu to shut down the odd badly behaved thing :) Tip:You can drag and drop a short cut on top of the Start menu to make your own easy to get to list :)

Happens to me on occasion as well. Only thing I know to do is reboot. It's a pain. Seems like definitely a plugin thing. Kyle

d.gauss, The 'pskill' that jzucker mentioned is very good, as well as Process Explorer (that Sheppola mentioned). These were written by the same person (Mark Russinovich) and is wonderful *free* stuff. I use Process Explorer instead of Task Manager in Windows and wouldn't be without it. It sits in my system tray all the time. Just a side note about Mark Russinovich... if you remember the Sony/BMG fiasco a couple years ago where they were found to be using a *root kit* as a DRM on CDs, he's the one that found it and called them on it. His Windows utilities are all very good, so good Microsoft bought him awhile back. ;)

Ted, As a side note, I have a fairly large CD collection and I rip alot of it into my computer, so I can listen while I work or load it into my iPod. I very rarely by new CDs unless they are done by independents or some of the more 'eclectic' smaller labels. Also... turn 'autoplay' off on your CD/DVD drives.

If you can't kill a process, it's the fault of the OS kernel (usually a sound driver bug)
