I posted this over at the musicplayer.com forums, but I thot I'd ask you cool people. I just stumbled over a Craig Anderton track, someone I've been meaning to listen to for a long time, and he has a track entitled I've Seen the Future. And... well, it's been a while since I've heard anything that sounded futuristic, but to my recollection, his track nailed what I expected to hear on a sci-fi movie song. It hit me like a phaser shot. It's not the most wonderful song, but it definitely was music from a different angle. I'm working on a proggy sort of album, and I've been fascinated with the concept of futuristic music ever since I read the liner notes on an ancient Dolenz Jones Boyce and Hart album - yes, those darn Monkees. They said that they were shooting for something like a 21st century sound, and this was... uh, I think it was done in 74? I'm not sure. I wish I could have bought it, but my money was tight at the time and it was vinyl. I hope to find that someday and nab it. Anyway, of course I did come across tunes done by all sorts of people like Pete Townshend and Gabriel, Thomas Dolby, David Sylvan and the ever cerebral Laurie Anderson. All their stuff was very clever, progressive, thoughtful and slick. But I don't remember their music hitting me with that same impact of Craig's track, tho it has been ages and memory doesn't always serve correctly. His song is just about the best example of someone trying to take normal musical elements and transmogrifying them into radical new directions while still making you tap your foot. And there's that other area I'm fascinated with, using the power of electronic instruments to make them less musically identifiable or imitative. Tomita is the best example I can think of as taking the sonic palette of his synthesizers as far as he could. He essentially wrote the book on synthesis, and to this day, synth jockeys don't really do much that he hasn't already, 30 years ago. Well, enough rambling. Does anyone have any suggestions for music that sounds like it fell right out of a time machine? Links to mp3s would be great. Here's that link to the Keyboard Corner page on mp3.com, with a bunch of great songs, and a few that sound nicely futuristic, as well as Craig Anderton's track.
One of my favorite electronic artist. The website is designed around the theme of his latest album 'Supermodifier' You can't hear much of his album tracks on the site, but I'll see about finding some mp3's for you. To me, his music defies all genres. found some! a few snippets here and there... 18
Good lord pk, after looking at the intro to his site a few times, I'm ready to give up! Man, now that's a dang website! I'm forever in your debt. Okay.... this guy is just... odd, no doubt about it. Genre busting as heck. Those Amazon snippets are too snipped, but I'm obliged. I can see that I'm gonna be hypnotized by that website for a few days now.
it takes a few to load, but at the bottom right you have the options that come up. There's one called the Supermodifier, where your computer keyboard can be used to trigger different of his samples, all for fun of course, but it's pretty cool. His site is sick - in a good way, that is - this guy inspires me like very few electronic artists do. IMO, that's the sound of the future.
