V40 rear wiper fault

I have a year 2000 V40 and the rear wiper is not working either by manual control or by the automatic function when in reverse with the front wiper on. All of the other electrics in the car are seeming to be OK. There is live to the motor,and a motor known to be OK doesn't work if substited. I am thinking that it may be a faulty relay but cannot find which one of the many covers it. The local Volvo dealer is having difficulty in finding it on his parts screen. The car is an automatic which may vary the wiring layout when in reverse. Has anyone had this experiance or can tell me where the relay is situated.

a wild guess but near the reversing light? it would kind of make sense to tap off power there

Does sound to be a wiring / relay related issue. If you have a multi meter check the connector plug for a live feed or equally try and trace the earth. could be as simple as a poor earth or iffy connection. Does your handbook not identify which relay does what, or is there a guide in the relay box?

Rear wiper

Something to check -I have seen many Volvo estate rear wipers where the shalf going through the tailgate/window has rusted and locked up. This often is the result of the rubber external cover splitting and letting in water. Everything seems to be ok but the motor can no longer cope so gets warm if left trying to run. Cheap cure is to remove tailgate trim - disconnect arm at motor - squirt some WD40 around the shaft and then carefully work the wiper from the outside manually until it frees up - then try to pack some vasaline under the rubber cover to stop more water getting in.
