Seperating one region seperates others

Anyone hear of this problem or know what could cause it? Say I have 5 audio files in the audio bin. I drag one out onto the edit window and use the seperate region command to make a new region within that audio file. This works fine except that every file in the audio bin now has new regions as well. Then if I create another region, not just one, but twice as many regions are added to the audio files that are in the bin (and not the edit window). So the first edit creates 3 regions in every file, the 2nd edit creates 6, the 3rd creates 12, the 4th creates 24, etc etc. This must be some kind of bug, but is there a workaround, or something I can do?

Is it possible that the track you're working with may be part of an edit group (perhaps the other grouped tracks are hidden?) If this was the case you'd be inadvertently seperating many regions instead of one - and creating multiple new "waste" regions in the process.

Hello. I just want to make sure I understand what you are asking. Let's say you start with five audio regions. Kick, snare, hi-hat, tom, floor tom. Are you saying that if you do a separate on the kick region, it will create new regions in snare, hi-hat, etc.? Or are you saying if you do a separate on kick, it will create kick-01, kick-02, kick-03,etc.? Those are two different things. If it's the first case, as was mentioned above, you have an edit group enabled. Anything you do to one, you will do to the others. If it's the second case, that is the way Pro Tools works, as well as most software out there. Regions can get out of hand in the list when there is heavy editing. I would recommend removing the one's not used on a regular basis.

With only one of the audio files in the edit window being edited, the audio files in the audio bin (which aren't in the edit page) get seperated too. This happens regardless of what audio file is dragged into the edit window and edited (all other files in the bin get seperated as well). So... Audio bin before edit: kick snare hat If I have just the kick file in the edit window and cut it in half (no other audio files are in the edit window), I get this in the audio bin: Kick-01 Kick-02 snare-01 snare-02 hat-01 hat-02 etc, etc... If I make another seperation, I then have 4 regions for every audio file. a 3rd seperation, and I have 8 regions for every audio files. What this means is that any seperation i do, not only afffects that region(s) I am working on in the edit window, but every single region in the audio bin (not to be confused with the audio files themselves). I have seen this happen from time to time, but this is the first time it is reproducable every time. Luckily it's just a little test session with one track for the sake of investigation, but if this were happening on a full session, one edit would create so many regions the computer would likely come to its knees coughing up blood.
