Editing Track in Reaper

Hi all, Been using Reaper for a short while now and I'm very impressed with it, we're on the verge of buying the license for it =) Just wondered if I am missing something, I come from a Cubase background and one thing that was very handy was being able to select a section of a track and apply +/- gain to just that part of it. From what I can see, there appears to be a couple ways of doing this in Reaper. 1) Cut the section of the track out and use Item Settings to adjust the gain for the entire wav. 2) Open the entire wav in en external editor and adjust it there. The problem with the first way is that its quite messy if you are making a lot of changes through a large track and the 2nd way, using the external editor is a bit fiddly as when I have finished editing it, I have to save it as another file and then in Reaper swap it over to the new file as the original one is locked (because Reaper is still using it). Am I missing a trick here or is this the way it is at the moment? Cheers Dave

hi - EDIT: welcome! the forum is your friend, as is search, as are extensions from sws and xenakios. -- with some assigning of actions you can achieve this and be pretty speedy: press '?' to bring up actions then find the action 'toggle track (pre fx) volume envelope visible - and assign it to a key of choice. you can of course just r-click the env button on track to select. when you select an area ( r-click drag or alt-r-click drag depending on your prefs) hit that key and then just by moving the automation fader it automatically trims the selected areas pre-fx volume adjusted up or down. there are also the actions 'automation lane: increase/decrease active fader a little bit' which if you assign to keys as well means you can then: make a selection - [hit key] show envelope - [hit key] increase gain or decrease gain - pretty swift with key strokes, with mouse concentrating on making selections. bonus is you have a lane that shows any changes visibly and is non-destructive. hope that helps -- i tend to split any bits that are too loud or quiet with 'S' then use the item gain handle (top of item) to adjust - shift clickdrag allows you to increase gain beyond 0db.

Hi, Ah that's pretty good way of doing it, I've not used the Automation on Reaper yet. I only messed with it a little in Cubase previously but not for volume/gain. Cheers!

How to you raise GAIN in post? 

I've been using Reaper a short while for voice acting, and I need to raise the gain in my files. After I Gate and Compress, they are much too soft. I was told by another voice actor Reaper user that it's in the Comp, but I can't find anything that amplifies or makes it louder, tried everything. Read the previous posts, but didn't see a clear answer ("press key", well, what key?) Any help please? Thanks.

no wait... first ..if you use for you external editor, adobe audition [or even it's forerunner Cool Edit Pro [pc only] then when you Save in the ext. editor, what you did there goes right back to the track in reaper with those changes in place. next... other way is use the vol. envelope for the whole track, or even for just the media item [you might call it a clip] you can set the vol. up with both these without having to cut up the media item.
