Let me inline edit a new midi item

if I insert a new midi item and then try to do an "inline edit" i.e. "E" I get nada but if I use via the menu "built in midi editor" I do get that. It really should work the same way whether the file is empty or not i.e. I should be able to pop the inline editor on the empty midi item. thanks

Works fine here? Sorry, that doesn't help you but the IME is supposed to open when you insert a new MIDI item and hit 'E'. Are you sure you didn't confuse "New MIDI item" and "Empty item"?

nope, it was a midi item, keep in mind that as I stated I was able to do " open built in midi editor" ergo it was a midi item. This sounds related to an old issue that the behavior may be affected by whether one has a secondary midi editor specified. I'll do a video capture later. thanks for the feedback.

Hmm I've just tried this, works fine. Here's exactly what I did: 1. Made a new track 2. Hit Alt+Insert for new midi item 3. Hit "E" and it instantly became the inline midi editor

what's your setup for secondary midi editors ?

are you using .mid files by any chance?

at work I have a vanilla i.e. non used latest version of Reaper and I can't replicate my issue here. I have added two external editors for .mid albeit bogus ones i.e. iTunes and quicktime respectively, so the number of editors does not affect things. My only further thoughts is that if Reaper is writing to the Windows registry maybe there's something left over from a previous life that's getting in the way. I don't generally create midi from scratch in Reaper so this is more of an annoyance than anything else. When I get Sibelius 6 and I'm able to rewire my need for editing in midi i.e. within Reaper will be greatly reduced.
