tyre rotation practices

what is the general approach to tyre rotation? At the recent service on my V50 I was surprised to hear that the dealership recommended NOT to rotate tyres, which I personally found somewhat disturbing.

aye that's correct. You should keep the best tyres on the rear. I was a tad annoyed when my dealer switched the fronts to the backs to put the best tread on the front. They soon swapped them back when I pointed out their error. do a few searches on here, it's been brought up before. This is probably a stupid question, but why do you put the best tyres on the rear?
