Yup, that pop will happen if you don't power off the monitors first. You should always turn your monitors (or monitor amp if using passive monitors) ON LAST and OFF FIRST. I think you're fine using the power strip to turn them on and off as long as you don't hear the pop. The monitor power switch may have a mute that kicks in first before powering them off which would keep a pop from happening.

Power up monitors last when beginning to work in studio, turn them off first when you're done. It's pretty self-explanatory.... The pops you hear are generated by signal which still runs through all the circuitry.
