I have a question about my 1998 2.0T (that I'm still waiting to proof test from my previous lack of power problem) Looking into the engine bay from the front, on the right hand end of the cam cover, there is (certainly 1, maybe 2) circular plastic cover(s), in line with the camshaft(s). In line with the front cam-shaft, this plastic cover is only part in place, and not sitting flush with the block. It's like it's been pushed in at the bottom, and has popped out at the top. I'm pretty sure it happened when the car was in for some service work a few years ago, and they fitted some warranty recall fix, relating to either the brakes or the crankcase breather I think, as the cap is in the same area as some of the pipework that they fitted. I've only really noticed it now, as I've been spending lots of time under the bonnet trying to solve my intermittent power problem. (for reference, the Garage in question which I no longer have any dealing with was former Hapstead Volvo, who (I have also found out) also ripped me off in the past on servicing, by not being able to remove the plastic engine cowling, shearing off one of the mounting points on the head in the process, and not bothering to replace 2 out of the 4 spark plugs on a service where I was charged for them, because the plastic cover would not allow access). Also was charged for new front discs, instead of checking and tightening the wheel bearing (after specifically mentioning that there was a noise from the front) resulting in needing a new hub carrier because the bearing overheated and could not be removed. :angry2:Anyway, I digress, and vow to never use main dealers again. There is no oil leaking from this place, and as far as I know it's not causing a problem, but I wonder if I should try to prise the cover out, and reseat it properly. Can anyone think of an issue with leaving it like it is, or would I be advised to remove and reseat it?
Hopefully someone with the saem block weill be able to confirm if this is standard (i know othr engines which look like this and it is correct and standard) If it isn't leaking and otherwise not causing you any problems suggest leaving it as is. Howd the power search going?? any progress...
Thanks mharriso, I'll leave it as is then for now. The power problem I've not made any progress on in the last 2 weeks as I've been away on business, but I hope to have a long drive this weekend, so we'll see if the filter change has made any difference, and if it splutterrs again, there's a few things relating to the fuel system that I'll check on at the time the fault is there (fuel tank vacuum, injector performance)
