How Do I create a "real time" linux kernel

cAPSLOCK, daverich, spock, I see you guys know more Linux than I do, I know enough to properly set up a box, and get all my repositories in order, along with install some tar packages from the command line. I don't know any compiling (don't think I need to I just need the commands). Can you guys tell me "what a real time kernel is?" And also, information on how to do it / compile it or just places I can go to learn what you're talking about. As I'm sure it has to do with latency in regards to audio. Thanks, And does WINE work on x64 versions of Ubuntu, or Fedora, or whatever build I decide to work with. Thanks.

it is the basic guts of linux that everything else sits on. You should be able to download an RT Kernel from your repository - then in GRUB you should be able to choose which kernel you want. Kind regards Dave Rich

If you are using NVIDIA drivers or ndiswrapper for your network card, you'll more than likely need to recompile the realtime kernel to get these to work correctly under it (meaning a bunch of command line work, and probably an hour or two of waiting for it to compile). FWIW, I didn't notice much improvement at all in audio latency under the realtime kernel vs the standard ubuntu kernel I used when I dabbled into Linux a few months ago.

Hey Larry. I'm using a standard Linux kernel in Ubuntu and Wineasio. I am getting latency around 5ms with Soundblaster Live. I see very little need to upgrade to a realtime kernel. If you have Wineasio working, how is your latency?

the easiest and laziest way is getting the ubuntu studio image (built in real time kernel and preconfigurated jack) ;)
